Spotlight on the LUMINA Soundtrack: Sense of Akasha

In response to all the lovely feedback about how much viewers are enjoying the soundtrack for LUMINA the Web Series, we are going to post a series of interviews with each of the contributing bands. First up are Italian postrock quintet Sense of Akasha, whose song "Make Me Real" gives the ending of LUMINA Webisode 1: Single Women a strong emotional finish.

Sense of Akasha features Armin (vocals, guitar), Klaus (vocals, guitar, bass), Ivo (drums, glockenspiel, sampler), Christian (vocals, bass, guitar) and Irene (vocals, cello, piano.) LUMINA director Jen Thym recently had the opportunity to talk with Klaus, singer and guitarist for Sense of Akasha.

JT: The band name is wonderful - how did you come up with the name "Sense of Akasha"?

Klaus: The word Akasha derives from “Sanskrit”, an old Indian language, possibly one of the oldest languages in general. According to an old Indian philosophy every element such as water, earth or fire stands for a specific sense. In this case “Akasha” also called the fifth element transports the sound.

JT: The music video for "Make Me Real" was also filmed by Andreas Thalhammer and XiaoSu Han, the same cinematographers as LUMINA. How was it working with Andy and Xax?

Klaus: Working together with Andy and Xax was a big deal for us. These guys are absolutely amazing. They created a world for itself and made up the right atmosphere we wanted to convey with this song. By the way we had a lot of fun, food and drinks together at least we guess so :-). Staying for two days in a lodge surrounded by one of the most beautiful mountainous landscapes in world accompanied by jolly weather and interesting people, would you ask for more?

JT: Name your top five musical influences.

Klaus: Explosions in the Sky, the Notwist, Sonic Youth, Deus (the old stuff), classical music

JT: What's in store for the band in the near future? Any concert tours, new albums?

Klaus: The last year we played a lot of gigs in order to promote our latest album, which was successfully received by our audience and the international press. We are planning a couple of interesting projects for the next year. One is a collaboration with the German artist Julia Bornefeld, for us it will turn out in producing a soundtrack for an artistic intallation. Another project is the realization of a new video and finally for the summer 2010 we plan to produce a new album. Afterwards a tour will certainly follow.

JT: If you were transported to the world of LUMINA, where would you rather be: the Light Realm or the Dark Realm?

Klaus: Oh it is difficult to say and honestly we wouldn’t guarantee for our decision, probably we would switch from one into the other.
